Regional Training Program on Renewable Energy Development and Application in the GMS: Sharing Lessons Learned and Best Practices - November 26-30, 2012, Kunming, Yunnan province, PR China

December 19, 2012

Renewable energy, and the development of associated technology to promote renewable energy, is increasingly seen as a logical and indeed necessary priority area. In order to effectively make the transition from a fossil fuel driven energy system to a future renewable-based energy system, it is essential for GMS countries to build capacity through manpower training, strengthening institutions, and building the necessary infrastructure.

To cope the constrains of renewable energy development and promotion in the GMS, MI, with support from the Yunnan Provincial Administration of Energies and the Foreign Affairs Office of the Peoples Government of Yunnan Province successfully conducted the Regional Training Program on Renewable Energy Development and Application in the GMS: Sharing Lessons Learned and Best Practices.

Focusing on presenting the importance of renewable energy technology for both the industrial and rural sectors, the training program together brought professionals from the academic, research and extension institutions from the six GMS countries.

Over the four days, participants extended and deepened their awareness and understanding of the importance of renewable energy sources, available technologies and their applications, and technical and non-technical issues limiting the application and use of renewable energy technology.

Among the six GMS countries, China is most advanced in the development and commercialization of renewable energy technology. The training course thus promoted technological and knowledge exchange and cooperation between China and the rest of the GMS as an important step in fostering cooperation in future energy needs and ultimate energy security in the GMS.
